Cancer research is a cause that is close to my heart. In May 2007, I lost my aunt Barbara Steimle to brain cancer, and in May 2009, my father Edward Fox was also diagnosed with brain cancer.
I started a training program to run the 2009 Marine Corps Marathon the week before my father’s diagnosis. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep my commitment to run the race, but I knew my father never would have wanted me to quit on account of him. Each week as I got closer to my goal, my father’s condition worsened. He passed away in November 2009, one month after I completed the Marine Corps Marathon. I knew the next time I trained for a marathon I wanted fight back against brain cancer for what it did to my family.
On March 18—my birthday—I’ll be running the 2012 Honda LA Marathon for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure to honor the legacies of my father and aunt, and give hope to those suffering from cancer. This will be a challenging race, but one accomplishment I will be incredibly proud of and honored to do.
