In March of 2012 I will run my second full marathon.
But just last year, I ran the same race -- the 2011 LA Marathon -- only a few short weeks after my father, DAVID RANDOLPH, was diagnosed with a malignant glioblastoma brain tumor.
I returned home in early March 2011 to be with my family for my dad's surgery, and it was of course a very difficult time for all of us. But as he recovered, I knew one thing for certain -- my dad would be proud if I came out to LA and ran the race I had been training so hard for, even with the new mental hurdles that now stood in my way. I came, I saw. It rained (A LOT), and I ran.
I am so proud to say that my dad is continuing to fight brain cancer. Radiation, oral and intravenous chemotherapy have become a way of life for my family. But he amazes all of us with his more than positive attitude and continued passion for life. This horrible disease struck without warning. He has taken care of himself and his health, stayed active throughout his entire life. He is recently retired and had looked forward to many more years of good health. Brain cancer, due to its anomalous nature, is a complete enigma. It strikes for no reason, with no family history, with no traceable causes. And research into treatment and cures are underfunded compared to other types of cancer.
That's why I'm dedicating my 26.2 to my father. To his fight. And to a cure.
