THE STORY:

When you run for CFK, you’ll take pride in knowing that each step you take paves the path for 500 under-privileged NYC children to receive fitness and nutrition at their school.

100% of funds will go towards establishing a brand new Healthy Living program at 2 CFK partner schools.

Why This Matters:

Today’s children are expected to be the first generation in American history to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. This has been caused in part by reductions in school physical education programs. Only 3.8% of elementary schools provide the recommended daily physical education to their students, and this deficiency is even more pronounced in the low-income schools we serve.

As a result, child obesity rates have increased across the board, but particularly for children in high-poverty rate schools. Between 2003 and 2007, obesity rates increased 23% for low-income children. The effects of childhood obesity are numerous: from a lifetime of health problems (including Type II Diabetes, hypertension, asthma and heart disease) to emotional and psychological effects, including low self-esteem and depression. Current studies also show that poor eating and inactive lifestyles have a direct effect on academic performance.

Funds afforded through the 2012 ING NYC Marathon charity spots will initiate additional gym classes, brand new nutrition classes, and structured recess time for 500 students at 2 partner CFK schools. Setting students on the right track to reach their full potential by building the healthy living skills they need to chart their own means of impacting the world.
