EVENT: 2011 ING New York City Marathon - $1 Mil a Mile

THE STORY:

Dear Friends and Family;

On November 6th, I'm THRILLED to be running the 2011 ING New York City Marathon for the first time. To make it that much more special I'm doing it to raise money for Education Through Music (ETM).

As most of you know I've been a singer and musician my entire life. Going to LaGuardia HS for Music and Art to study voice literally changed my life. Not just as a musician but it was instrumental in teaching me how to learn, excel in every other subject and build relationships that I'm proud to say I still have to this day. I've had the privilege of an exceptional musical education over the years but music education should not be a privilege.

I've known and participated in ETM programs over the years and what they do is amazing. One of my closest friends (from LaGuardia) even used to work with them.

ETM is a wonderful organization that forms long-term partnerships with New York City schools that serve disadvantaged children who lack school-wide music programs. These partnerships provide weekly, skills- and standards-based music instruction to every child in each school, and provide supporting services such as training, professional development, leadership guidance, assessment and capacity building to music teachers, classroom teachers, principals and parents. Underlying all of ETM's programs and services is the philosophy that learning in music is as fundamental to the growth of children as learning in math, science, and literacy. The goal for education, especially at the elementary levels, is to provide a balance of experiences and opportunities that enables children to acquire as many intellectual, emotional, and social skills as possible, as deeply and thoroughly as possible.
