I ran the 2012 Boston Marathon. I was stunned and saddened to see the images of the 2013 Boston Marathon finish line where I had crossed with my 3 sons.
Boston Strong is about the amazing city of Boston and the region and its commitment to excellence in the running year after year of the second largest sporting event in the world after the Super Bowl.
Team Eye and Ear is about a bombing injured community that many of you may not heard of. When many think of the bombing they immediately think of the loss of limbs. Truth be known there are many more types of injuries that will follow the people that were there that fateful day.
Mass Eye and Ear treated just under 100 people for specific hearing and vision loss issues from the bombing. These lives were changed forever as people begin new journeys with hearing and vision loss. Mass Eye and Ear treated hundreds more for all types of injuries and the entire Boston community is so proud of all the great heroic work they did at the hospital that day.
My mission as a deaf-blind adventurer, advocate and storyteller is to help others on life's journey with vision and/or hearing loss.
For those with vision loss their lens to the world has changed and their relationships to the THINGS is changed...walking, navigation, dialing a smartphone and being able to coordinate a wardrobe become bigger challenges than ever before.
For those with hearing loss their connection to the world to PEOPLE is forever changed. Hearing loss is a very complex and isolating condition. It is not just about volume. Hearing also provides us with signals for fear/safety, spatial orientation, emotional tone (happiness / anger) and the clarity to appreciate the beautiful things like a concert pianist and much more.
To this end, I am thrilled to announce that Vision Service Plan and TruHearing will be the lead corporate sponsor to Team Eye and Ear that is well on course to raise $750,000 this year. Vision Service Plan and TruHearing are leaders in the vision and hearing fields and saw a powerful opportunity to support me as a deaf-blind athlete, Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, the New England community and the world at large.
I have joined the 2014 Team Eye and Ear to continue to advance my personal mission of helping those with hearing and/or vision loss. Market leaders like Vision Service Plan and TruHearing see this as well everyday as they help people live full, active and productive lives with eyeglasses, contact lenses and hearing aids.
I am one of approximately 15,000 - 20,000 people in the U.S. with Usher’s Syndrome, a disease that progressively robs people of both their hearing and vision. There are no known treatments. I have lost 85% in the low tones and 100% in the high tones of my hearing from birth and in my 20's I began to experience night blindness and vision loss which continues to deteriorate.
Despite this, I travel the world as a deaf-blind adventurer, advocate and storyteller. I have completed climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Quandary, competed in the World T.E.A.M Sports, led expeditions of hearing impaired / deaf kids to the Amazon and the Grand Canyon and hosted the 2013 No Barriers USA Summit. This past year, I completed the Register's Annual Bike Race across Iowa (RAGBRAI - 400+ miles) as well as the Mighty Mac Labor Day Run with the Michigan Governor's Fitness Council.
I am raising essential funds for Mass. Eye and Ear to help find a cure for this debilitating condition and those affected by the bombing.
I have been a Mass. Eye and Ear patient for the past 20 years and they have slowed the devastating progression of my disease. Mass. Eye and Ear is home to the world's largest private vision and hearing research facility.
