THE STORY:

Watch the CBS news clip of our story:

Hello everyone,

Thank you for visiting my page.  I have been given the opportunity to run in the 2014 Boston Marathon, and am proud to run with the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary team to support research to cure Juvenile Retinoschisis and other retinal conditions.

Our son Quentin was diagnosed with Juvenile Retinoschisis, a genetic bilateral eye condition that can cause a progressive loss of vision due to the splitting of the retinal lining, at the age of 3.  We were referred to the MEEI by a wonderful pediatric ophthalmologist, Dr. Amita Bhatt, and began what would become a long and very close relationship with Dr. Shizuo Mukai, a world-renowned retinal specialist. I will always remember when we first learned of Quentin's condition, and of a macular hole in his left eye, which caused the limited vision.  Although shocked, we quickly realized how fortunate we were to have access to the world's best doctors and hospitals.  Quentin has undergone two surgeries at the MEEI since the initial diagnosis, and continues to see Dr. Mukai and his team (as well as Dr. Bhatt and his low vision ophthalmologist, Dr. Miller), on a regular basis to monitor his condition.  He and we have always been treated with the utmost respect and received top notch care.

For just over a year now, Quentin has been following an experimental treatment based on a medication historically used to treat glaucoma.  Quentin takes drops in each eye 3 times daily everyday, and while it has been challenging at times, Quentin has been incredibly cooperative and committed.  His resiliency has paid off.  We were recently suprised to learn that his vision has actually dramatically improved!  We are hopeful this drop treatment will also slow the progression of his condition and inspire new research to find a cure.

While there is currently no cure for Juvenile Retinoschisis, through this effort, we hope to increase awareness and funding for research to learn more about the disease, to develop a cure, and to prevent any further loss of vision for Quentin and others affected by this disease and other retinal conditions.

I am honored to be associated with the MEEI.  We truly appreciate your support, and any contribution will help this cause, both for Quentin and for so many others.  Please feel free to forward a link to this page to others who may be interested in supporting Mass Eye and Ear research.
