BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
DAYS TO GO: 121
I am running the 2014 Boston Marathon this April to finish the race Liz, I, and our entire Massachusetts Eye and Ear team started one year ago.
Liz and I were just two blocks away when the awful events unfolded. After the smoke cleared, and we reached our children to find out they were OK, we turned our attention to those in need and forgot about the fact that we are so very close to finishing.
Now we run to finish!
I am running to support the pediatric laryngology lab and to translate basic science research into practical ways of helping children who cannot speak to finally speak and children who cannot breathe (without a tracheotomy) to finally breathe.
This mission is called Operation Airway. It is a first of its kind in the world where we bring a combined team of pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric intensivists, and pediatric nurses all down to Ecuador to perform airway reconstructive surgeries on children and to have their tracheotomies safely removed and to allow them to breathe by themselves for the very first time.
The goal of these missions is to help the children one at a time, but then, also, to teach the local health care doctors and nurses the skills and team training required so that we hope that, in several years, we will no longer be needed there and can move elsewhere to help children in other areas who need it! Please see our website and our blog for more information (www.MassEyeAndEar.org/OperationAirway)!
