BENEFITING: YOUTH AND SHELTER SERVICES INC
EVENT: 2012 IMT Des Moines Marathon
THE STORY:
Iowa Homeless Youth Centers (IHYC) works to eliminate homelessness among children, youth and young mothers in Polk County. With citizen support and assistance, IHYC helps homeless individuals and families live independently and attain self-sufficiency.
Programs offered by for runaway and homeless youth at IHYC include
- Street Outreachwhich goes out every night to locate teens, provide immediate assistance, including shelter, and help them access resources they need.
- Buchanan Transitional Living Centerwhere young men and women ages 16 through 21 begin to learn and practice skills necessary to maintain independent living on their own.
- Lighthouse Host Homewhere young women ages 16 to 25 can live with their children and learn and practice parenting and independent living skills.
- Aftercare. As a result of Reggie's death, Youth & Shelter Services, Inc. (IHYC's parent organization) led the effort to develop the Iowa Aftercare Services Network (IASN) to provide services to those aging out of foster care. Youth who turn 18 and choose to ‘age out’ of the foster care system are referred to case managers from IASN who help them meet education, employment and housing goals.
- Education & Employment Services. All programs are provided with one-on-one assistance regarding education and employment. A Post-Secondary Program also works with youth as they work towards completing thier AA degree.
