Since 1995, Medicine for Humanity,  a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Leo Lagasse, has been bringing much-needed medical care and creating sustainable programs of education, prevention and treatment to improve the health of women in under-served populations around the world by:        

• Sending highly trained medical teams to provide critically needed on-site surgical training to local doctors and nurses     
• Assisting clinics and hospitals in developing sustainable programs for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of maternal birth injuries, lowering death rates, incidence of fistulas, pelvic organ injuries, and women’s

Our volunteer nurses and resident doctors currently travel for three-week medical missions to Uganda approximately three times a year, to provide one-on-one training for local medical personnel.  Ongoing advanced medical education is also provided through our Global Medical Education distance learning programs delivered monthly via the internet.

Throughout our years of travel bringing urgently needed hands-on care to women and newborns, we have understood the importance of training local caregivers in these underserved countries as well as improving their medical education. Combining this distance learning program with continued on-site training, will lead to significant and lasting improvement in maternal and newborn care.

Our goal for the next five years is to increase on-site medical missions and expand this unique Global Medical Education program in Uganda, creating a model which we can then duplicate throughout Africa and other underserved countries around the world.
