In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are going to keep the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® fundraising page open throughout the month of October so keep your amazing work up! We are halfway to our goal of $100,000.00 and with your continued help, we can go the distance!
A brief lesson on Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®....
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® began in October 2008 and is a fun, light-hearted way to build awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence and its negative impact on the community. Men (and women) don high heeled shoes and walk for mile in downtown San Diego! Everyone is encouraged to participate, including families, students, politicians, policemen, firemen, media, and business people, and we thank you for leading the way to ending domestic violence.
How critical is the issue of domestic violence to the safety of our friends and neighbors?
- 1 in 4 women is a victim of domestic violence
- 1 in 4 children is impacted by domestic violence
- The total cost of domestic violence in the U.S. exceeds 5.8 billion dollars annually
- Every year, the YWCA helps over 5,700 individuals overcome domestic violence and homelessness
