I have always felt things very deeply; whether it be a friend’s pain, the death of a schoolmate, or human rights violations, it affects me to the core. The recent events in the world – the earthquake in Haiti, the oil spill in the Gulf, the revolution across the Middle East, and most recently the earthquake in Japan – have further cemented my decision to choose a path that will allow me to help heal the sorrow in the world. I have had the good fortune to be born free and privileged, which isn’t true for the majority of people on this planet. I believe because I can help, I must help.
Although at times the amount of suffering in the world seems so insurmountable that the only option is to turn away, I believe that as much as it pains me to look I must look and I must act with my own two hands. Whether it be handing food to another, building a home, or shifting rubble. If we don’t look and try to deal with the horror in the world one piece at a time, we’re deliberately ignoring those in pain, while sitting in comfort and safety. My conscience cannot live with that.
Which is why I’m asking you to help me donate $5,000 dollars to Haiti. Not only will your money be going to a good cause, one that, as Misha pointed out, has been overlooked since being dropped from the headlines, but going on this trip to Haiti would mean the world to me. As much as the sorrow in the world pains me, I haven’t been able to do anything but donate a few dollars here and there. I want to actually build something that will help people. I want to be there, getting my hands dirty and creating a better future for the children I meet.
