THE STORY:

Fort Peck, Montana

Housing and Tribal Rights

Overcrowding is a severe problem on the Fort Peck Reservation in Eastern Montana. The Sioux and Assiniboine tribes at Fort Peck require new development to address current overcrowding challenges. The affiliated tribes are collaborating with designers and planners to address these issues through a community-focused design process encompassing green architecture and holistic planning strategies. Make it Right is leading the development of phased culturally-appropriate housing and associated community buildings. Architecture for Humanity is providing several community-inspired home designs.

Building a Legacy through Community-Led Design
The community-led design process plays a critical role in how the built environment shapes the lives that unfold within built world. Architecture for Humanity is honored and delighted to be a part of this team to lead the design for affordable, environmentally friendly and beautiful places in which to live.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Sustainability and resource conservation are at the forefront of our work. When we talk about sustainability, we are talking about more than just the environment. We are talking about creating lasting communities that can sustain themselves in a global context -- socially, economically and environmentally. To do so, communities need to be healthy, secure, diverse, just, equitable and enjoyable places for people to live, work, play and grow old.

Project Description
(1) 3 bedroom single-family house design
(1) 4 bedroom single-family house design

Architecture for Humanity strives to bring best practices in sustainable design to all our work. This includes the exploration of alternative energy, water/wind harvesting, clean water and sanitation, perma-culture and ecologically sensitive landscaping, day/night use of the facility and connections to the larger community and surrounds.

Participation of community members, and other stakeholders in all aspects of the design and construction process is welcomed and encouraged. This will include community workshops and/or construction training. Our goal is to impart best practices to local builders so that they may adopt these design and construction techniques in their future works.
