I wish I was half the writer as many of crowdrise's members. Alas, I am a designer working to make the world a better place by making software and web sites easier to use. I figure, if I can make someone's day a little bit better because she didn't want to throw her computer out the window, I've made a difference. But why stop there?!?!
I also believe in the healing power of storytelling and the arts. This is why I am on the board for BayKids. I started out as a volunteer video editor for BayKids. I would drop by the office after work and edit videos for these amazing kids. More than once I went home in tears. Not because it was sad, but because of the sheer will and courage these kids have. It is humbling. The one that sticks with me is Jose who, swollen from chemo, gave kids tips on how they should listen to their parents and look both ways before crossing the street. In the midst of his epic battle, which he sadly lost, Jose wanted to help other kids.
Life is about the moments and little decisions that we piece together. BayKids is there in the hospital to help shape some of these moments. We provide a break from chemo, dialysis, and the endless boredom of a sterile hospital room. In an environment where everything is out of their control, we give our kids a moment and a place where they are the director. I sincerely hope that you will consider supporting us so that we can reach more kids, provide more days in the hospitals we currently serve, and eventually expand beyond the San Francisco Bay Area.
