I’m proud to be a part of the Urban Arts Partnership community, both as a participant in several 24 Hour Plays on Broadway Benefits and especially in working directly with the students.
Students in underserved schools in New York City are often lacking the tools and training they will need to be successful in our digital society. I support the Urban Arts Partnership MediaLab project, because it provides advanced media training to these talented young people while also giving them a platform to raise awareness of issues affecting themselves and their peers.
The 2008 and 2009 summer MediaLab projects In My Shoes, and Ghetto Talks (respectively), high school students researched vital social issues, interviewed experts, trained as producers and documented and edited the stories they uncovered. They then effectively raised their voices to make an impact as part of an ongoing campaign, screening at schools across the city, online, and both were official selections at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival, The Tribeca Film Festival, and more.
This year’s project, Typecast, explores Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and the politics of food through the experiences of two of the students’ peers. These are thoughtful, affecting pieces of work, created by the students and facilitated by professional teaching artists.
Please help us to reach more students through MediaLab by making a gift to the project!
