What most people don't know about belly dancers, other than we dance at family parties, is that the vast majority of local belly dance shows are fundraisers for local charities, or for local branches of national charities. We don't get paid, but rather donate our time and resources, and very often food for the refreshment table for our guests. All monies raised, minus the overhead, is donated to the charity of the day.
WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:
10% of party booking and class fees go to charity...Some local, and some here on Crow, for both my own projects and that of others.
In the past, shows I have been in have donated to "Day One" (against domestic violence), "Autism Speaks", "Fragile X" (also for autism research), the "Rhode Island Food Bank", "Fundraising Efforts for Haiti" and the "ASPCA"...Future fundraising shows in the Fall of 2010 include those for the "Cystic Fibrosis Foundation" and "The Magical Moon Foundation" (a unique program that helps children with cancer learn coping skills which help them deal with the realities of their illness and their treatment(s)). Here in Rhode Island, combined with nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut, local belly dancers average about a show every three weeks.
However, as not everyone who may be interested may be able to get to our shows, I find that Crowdrise is a great alternative, allowing people to still give even if they can't be there.

Happy February, Crowdrise friend! Thank you for your support, through your donations, votes, advocacy and friendliness. It's good to find a local friend here!
You probably know all about the amazing promos that CR runs. Right now, I think the most awesome is the chance to win an iPad 2. Every time you donate $26, you are entered to win.
Your $26 donation to a Reader to Reader project would help us send 2 boxes full of books to an under-resourced library here in the states, or support special education in the DR, or get a women's school built in Nigeria, or get books to families in transition... there are plenty of choices and who knows, you might get lucky!
Happy reading,
Kat
