THE STORY:
Since the fiscal crisis in California occurred, state funding for land acquisition has been frozen. As a result, critical projects are not getting completed and communities are missing rare (some might even say once-in-a-lifetime) opportunities to secure land for conservation purposes at reduced prices. The Friends has been presented with a unique and exciting opportunity to turn this down turn into a challenge! For every $3 we raise for land acquisition, the federal government will contribute $7. These funds are designated for specific areas which include the Coachella Valley and some of the Friends priority projects like: protecting wildlife movement corridors, acquiring in-holdings in the National Monument and preserving key open space areas on the valley floor.
