Aquarium of the Bay is San Francisco Bay’s aquarium. Since opening in 1996, our focus has been on local marine life, beginning with our own backyard, San Francisco Bay. Our facility boasts 300 feet of crystal clear acrylic tunnels holding 700,000 gallons of carefully maintained Bay water that sustains approximately 20,000 animals, from sea stars to sevengill sharks.
Through transformative experiences with our engaging animals, Aquarium of the Bay is creating a watershed and ocean literate community through diverse programming targeted towards school groups, youth groups, community organizations, Aquarium visitors and our staff and volunteers.
Aquarium of the Bay’s Conservation Impact Programs are scientifically designed efforts where we work with partners to:
- Povide research on local shark population
- Bring back native salmon
- Assist chefs, restaurants and consumers in selecting sustainable seafood choices
- Support endangered species
- Combat climate-induced sea level rise
- Enact policy that will create healthy freshwater flows back to San Francisco Bay
- Create a series of original and ready-made temporary exhibitions that explore local and global environmental challenges: climate change, habitat loss and unsustainable harvest
Aquarium of the Bay strives to inspire conservation of the San Francisco Bay and its surrounding waters. Our hope is to be the catalyst for conservation of San Francisco Bay and beyond.
