THE STORY:
Ayana Johnson wrote -
I've been invited to participate in the Summit at Sea event taking place on April 8 - April 11. It's a meeting-of-the-minds to cultivate entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and environmental stewardship.
I'm especially thrilled about the opportunity to attend because this year the event has a focus on marine conservation, so I would have the opportunity to foster collaborations between and raise awareness among some very influential people about what needs to be done to preserve and restore the ocean's resources.
I just completed my marine biology PhD at Scripps Institution of Oceanography with a dissertation, entitled “Fish, Fishing, Diving, and the Management of Coral Reefs.” My research, conducted on the Caribbean islands of Curaçao and Bonaire, takes a holistic approach to understanding how to sustainably manage coral reefs by incorporating ecology, economics, and sociology.
Recently, I began developing a campaign to discourage developed word consumption of parrotfish, because they are herbivores critical to maintaining coral-dominated reefs.
Currently, I am a Knauss Policy Fellow contributing to the development of federal ocean policy at the National Marine Fisheries Service. I have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard University. I am also a jazz singer.
I'm really excited to attend Summit at Sea to meet people working to improve the world and the lives of others. I know my heart will be inspired and my brain reinvigorated to devote my efforts towards the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean's resources.
Thank you,
Ayana
