Everybody needs a home. Haiti? Rural America? Seth Rogen? Yep - we all need housing. And most of us need housing to be simple and accessible.
Community Rebuilds is a NPO located in Moab, UT (a rural community in southeastern Utah surrounded by a beautiful landscape). We bring young, emerging professionals to our rural town and teach them how to build straw bale homes. Why? Because rural Utah needs simple and accessible housing. Is that it? No - because rural America needs simple accessible housing. OK, is that it? No - because young, emerging professionals need a mechanism for change...like someone to teach them how to build simple and accessible housing so they can travel to places like Haiti and continue the trend.
WHY STRAW BALE? Because straw is an agricultural bi-product. That means that straw is usually thrown away or burned after the farmer separates the 'wheat from the chaff'. Now, John the Baptist had no idea that straw might someday be a terrific building block when he coined this phrase and identified straw as 'waste'. The 3 little pigs did not help when they used loose - not tightly baled - straw to build the home that would eventually be blown down by that big, bad wolf. But today, straw bales are a uniquely green way of building a solid home that costs less to build and much less to maintain than conventional 'green' homes.
Our program is simple: each year we set a goal to build 2 straw bale homes for 2 low-income families in Moab, UT. We recruit up to 8 student interns to join us in the Spring (Feb 1 - May 31) and 8 student interns in the Fall (Aug 1 - Nov 30). Each semester we build a home from foundation to finish. We provide our students a place to live and a food stipend of $100/month so they can just get out here and build for 4 months.
Earth day - the day we celebrate nature. Celebrate with us by donating to our program. Who knows? Maybe a Community Rebuilds graduate will someday build a straw bale home in your community!
It will take anywhere from 3 seconds to 1 minute for your pic to upload, depending on how big it is.
You're going to see this message every time you post a new pic. So, we're making the text really long so that it'll take you at least five picture uploads to read it all. Here's what we're thinking...While you're first picture is uploading think about someone you want to kiss. When you upload your second pic think about one friend who you can beat in a race. On your third photo upload think about your favorite food that begins with the letter H. While your fourth picture is uploading think about how great it would be if you were a world class breakdancer. While your fifth picture is uploading try to think of the best candy to eat if you were a mime spending a month in New Zealand. If you upload a sixth and seventh picture please just read all of this again.
IN PROGRESS
We're setting up your Fundraiser page right now. It will take anywhere from 3 seconds to 27 seconds.
CrowdRise is designed to help Volunteers and Fundraisers answer the call to service, raise money for Charity, and have the most fun in the world while doing it. To make sure we don't go out of business trying to help everyone raise lots of money for Charity, CrowdRise deducts 5% on donations made through our site and a $1 transaction fee for donations under $25 or a $2.50 transaction fee for donations $25 and over.
For example, with a $100 donation:
$100 Donation
-$5.00 (5%) CrowdRise's not wanting to go out of business fee
-$2.50 Transaction Fee
$92.50 goes to Charity

There's no better way to make a Fundraiser viral than by creating or joining a Fundraising Team.
A Fundraising Team is a group of Fundraisers or Volunteers, all working together for a common cause. It's like communism but more fun. Start or Join a Fundraising Team if you want to go beyond donating money and get more involved by spreading the word about the Fundraiser to your friends, family, co-workers, etc. Everyone on the Team gets their own Fundraising Page with the click of a button so we make it quick and easy to join the Team and even easier to tell your friends about it. Donating cash to a Fundraiser is amazing and much appreciated but imagine the impact you can have if you go a step further and ask everyone you know to donate too. And then a couple of them join the Team and spread the word to all their friends. We've seen this work successfully over and over and it can work for this Fundraiser too.
If you have any question about how to Join or set up a Team on CrowdRise, please Contact Us.
