Dear Family and Friends,
Autumn used to remind me of new beginnings. This feeling resulted from my identity as a student, my career as a social worker in education and my Jewish identity. Working in a school, I have always felt the opportunity to “start over” every year at this time. Both students and teachers alike have the chance to begin a new school year with fresh ideas, goals, hopes and dreams. In Judaism, autumn marks the beginning of a New Year. For me, this has always been a time of year for personal reflection, seeking insight into my choices, and emotional and intellectual growth. This has always been a time for me to consider the way I live my life and to ponder on the various ways that I can do better.
On October 2, 2009, in one instant, everything I believed in seemed to vanish when my beloved fiancée, Ben Sklaver was killed in Afghanistan. Following that time, I often felt I no longer had faith in any of these values I had so strongly believed in. Two autumn seasons later, faith is returning to me. I am doing my very best to live the life I planned on living with Ben and my son Danny. Some days this feels impossible. And some days, I stop, look around me and realize “I am doing it!” and I smile at knowing that Ben is watching and smiling back at us.
On October 9th, I am proud to be running my second Army 10 Miler in Washington, DC. The combination of running a military-related race to honor Ben as well as raising funds for ClearWater Initiative surrounds me with such incredible feelings that are almost impossible to describe.
ClearWater Initiative, a non-profit organization, promotes simple, innovative solutions for clean water in disaster areas. Founded in 2007 by Ben Sklaver, ClearWater Initiative projects are focused in conflict-affected areas of northern Uganda. We are on track to directly impact the lives of more than 50,000 people by 2013.
As the education advisor for ClearWater Initiative I am doing something I love, giving back to extraordinary communities in Uganda, and honoring Ben’s vision.
Asking for financial support is not simple or fun. The truth is that financial donations and the work of our dedicated volunteers are the cornerstones of our organization.
I kindly ask you to pledge any amount that you can to help us continue our efforts. My promise to you is that with your love and financial support, I will continue to honor your commitment. I will do this through my passion to help others, our ability to raise awareness regarding the water crisis in Uganda, and help children in the generations to come to “be the change you want to see in the world” (Mahatma Gandhi)
