THE STORY:

Don Spalding is running for Christy, a sophomore at Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School. Christy was a fairly quiet person until she was selected by audition to be an alto soloist for Carnegie Hall’s Too Hot to Handel education project. Too Hot to Handel is a 21st century gospel interpretation of Handel’s Messiah, fusing the timeless work with an invigorating blend of jazz, gospel, rock, and R&B. She was given two coaching sessions by Leslie Stifelman, the music supervisor for the Too Hot to Handel project. Christy’s experience in preparing for her solo last May at Harlem Stage gave her a newfound confidence and inspired her to continue; she recently told Don, “I can’t wait to get back to school so I can learn the rest of the Too Hot to Handel songs!” Christy will have her Carnegie Hall debut on Sunday, November 14 as part of the mass choir of New York City students for Too Hot the Handel: The Gospel Messiah.

Don recognized the spark in Christy’s eyes when she began to talk about learning and performing. Growing up, music and arts education was a vital part of Don’s life, connecting him more deeply to the world and giving him the confidence to perform. Don came to Carnegie Hall in 1986 after years in the theater and traveling the country as an actor/singer/dancer. He is now Director of the Carnegie Hall Patron Program.

Although Don no longer performs regularly these days, he is excited to see firsthand the impact that Carnegie Hall’s education programs have on aspiring artists like Christy. He runs for Christy as a reminder that a quality arts education doesn’t just add an activity to a young person’s life—it changes it forever.
