Hi, my name is Charles Johnson. I live in San Antonio, Texas. I'm nobody special, just someone who has been blessed about every day of my life, even when it didn' t seem so at the time. My wife, Melissa, and I have three kids; Meagan, Holden and Brien. Meagan is grown up, is married and just had a baby girl, our first grandchild. Brien is a student at the University of Alabama. Our son Holden, was born with a number of medical problems and was severely disabled. Six years ago, just after his eighteenth birthday, Holden passed away.
During his life, God put many people in our paths, who helped us care for Holden and just helped us, period. And even though there were times when I was really angry, I loved Holden (and still do). When he was gone, we struggled to fill the void that was left with his passing. And in time, I felt a longing to get involved in some type of mission work. Since then, I've been to Vietnam twice, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mission seems like a good way to try to honor the life of Holden and it's helped us to put our lives back together.
Mattresses for Congo was born out of a need that I saw when I visited there as a part of a four man mission team in May, 2012. One of our tasks was to visit hospitals in the Kasai region of Congo, and time after time, we saw a need for mattresses. At Good Shepherd Hospital in Tshikadji, we saw a young boy, who was suffering from malnutrition, sitting on a small piece of plywood because his bed had no mattress. We were told that Good Shepherd needs 100 mattresses. We had to act, so we created Mattresses for Congo to raise funds to purchase and deliver 375 mattresses to five different facilities. We've accomplished this goal and in the process, decided that we can continue with this work to help the people of Congo.
