THE STORY:

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

RiverCess is one of Liberia's least developed and isolated counties. Most households were displaced during the war and most residents live in extreme poverty with only 25% of the population having access to safe drinking water.

The majority of the population in RiverCess gets their water from contaminated open creeks and rivers for drinking and other household use. Hand pumps and wells constructed before the war have been mostly damaged or are in a state of disrepair.

90 percent of the population of RiverCess is without latrine facilities, forcing residents to use bushes and streams as public toilets. RiverCess has one of the highest rates of waterborne diseases among its residents, presenting an urgent need for intervention in the WASH sector.

The RiverCess County Development Agenda lists roads/bridges, health facilities, education, water/sanitation and agriculture/food security among its top priorities.

WHAT IS OUR PLAN?

This fall, we are launching our County by County (CbC) initiative to provide complete water coverage to RiverCess County by 2017 by constructing and rehabilitating 240 wells and hand-pumps.

CbC will benefit over 60,000 residents, and ensure that RiverCess meets the Liberian Government’s 250 persons per safe waterpoint standard.

The initiative will also improve the overall quality of life for the people of RiverCess allowing more time for school, work and family which will in turn bring tangible economic benefits to the county and ultimately reduce poverty.
