HERE'S THE STORY:
Dear Friends & Family,
In less than one month, I will be departing to climb Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in North and South America as well as the Southern Hemisphere. My primary reason for ascending to 22,841 ft with a 60lb pack on my back is to continue to build awareness of the poverty in Africa and to build support for Dwankhozi Hope.
In August of 2010, I returned to Africa to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. During my time in Tanzania, I visited a Maasai village and saw first hand the tremendous poverty endured by the people of Africa. This experience emphasized to me how even in our current economic recession, we still need to make a difference for those in need.
A dear friend of mine, Matt MacLean and his wife Beth, also recognized the poverty in Africa and decided to make a difference through founding Dwankhozi Hope.
What is Dwankhozi Hope?
Dwankhozi Hope is a charity that nurtures economically disadvantaged children by supporting a Community School in the state of Zambia. The organization has had the opportunity to provide up to 600 economically disadvantaged children, many of whom are orphans, the chance to have an education and to fulfill their dreams in this rural area.
Why do I personally support Dwankhozi Hope?
Unlike other organizations, where only a small percentage of your donation actually goes to the cause, Dwankhozi Hope contributes almost all donations directly to the Dwankhozi School with very little overhead. Past contributions have made it possible to complete a school building, dig a new well for clean water and sanitation, purchase books, desks, & other school supplies as well as provide solar power to the school.
Although Dwankhozi Hope has made tremendous progress, there is still more that we can do to help these children and to strengthen their hope in a bright future through education. Current needs include additional supplies, teacher training, additional teacher housing, and building projects. To help fulfill these needs, I’m asking that you consider making a donation to Dwankhozi Hope in support my climb.
I was able to raise $7,000 USD for my Kilimanjaro climb, which made a difference for Dwankhozi by building teacher housing. The housing is critical so they can attract teachers to this rural area, especially considering they now have 100 students for every teacher. Overwhelmed by the difference we were able to make last year through your support of my Kilimanjaro climb, I am hoping to raise the bar to $10,000 USD in support of my Aconcagua climb. Please donate whatever you feel comfortable, but remember that any amount you are able to give makes a tremendous difference in this community’s life and virtually all of it goes directly to the school. Also, it’s a timely tax write-off as year-end approaches!
The trip begins Dec 9th, next stop: getting to 22,841 feet!
