HERE'S THE STORY:
This year we visited a Maasai community at Campi Ya Kanzi in a remote area of Southern Kenya. I had the opportunity to work in their medical clinic and this experience provided me a glimpse into the culture and beliefs of this incredible people.
The Maasai are truly inspiring. Despite the numerous difficulties they face in their harsh surroundings, they remain committed to preserving their land from the pressures of industrialization. Their incredible culture is devoted to the preservation of the wildlife and the environment, which they believe is their calling. They are committed to practicing sustainable farming and agriculture.
Yet the resources to take care of their own health is severely lacking. A single doctor serves about 7,000 villagers and two nurses. We had over 40 patients lined up outside our two-room clinic in the morning. Most of them walked for hours to get there, as there is no available means of transportation, and villagers are spread across the 280,000 acres of Maasai land. The ill and young often die without the ability to get to the clinic. The doctor has no means to get to birthing mothers in time, and patients with traumas have no way to get to the hospital.
We felt compelled to help the Maasai organize their health care using the simple principles we have come to expect in modern medicine. Their doctor thought the ambulance could save the lives of the most vulnerable patients – children, pregnant women and the elderly – and help traumas get to the hospital in time.
We are organizing a drive for supplies and funds to buy and outfit an ambulance for the MCWT health clinic. 100% of your donations will go towards the purchase of the ambulance. You can also directly donate toward specific clinic needs – send us a message and we can help you organize this.
