The Children's Nature Institute educates children and families through interactive experiences with nature, to cultivate respect and responsibility for the natural environment.
Our program goals include:
--to promote academic achievement by giving children opportunities to develop and practice fundamental skills important for reading, science, and math (e.g., critical thinking, problem solving, and speaking skills);
--to teach children, in an age-appropriate manner, about natural science concepts such as ecology and ecosystems, adaptations, and local flora and fauna;
--to get children excited (yes!) about learning by offering direct, hands-on learning experiences with nature by fostering their innate curiosity;
--to show children how to be environmental stewards from an early age by modeling respectful behavior towards nature; and
--to increase teacher and parent involvement in the preservation of the natural environment by modeling low-cost and age-appropriate science and nature activities for them to share with their children.
Founded 25 years ago, CNI has been at the forefront of the movement to get children outside to learn and explore and, in so doing, care about the environment. Since then, we have served almost 300,000 children, their parents and teachers in the greater Los Angeles area. By guiding children in their experience with nature --on fieldtrips to local parks, beaches and mountains—we help children establish a relationship with the environment.
With 3 environmental educators and 2 traveling classrooms, CNI works with HUNDREDS of schools, early-education centers and social service agencies and we serve more about 15,000 children each year. Our focus is on reaching children in underserved communities to share with them the wonder of nature – as a tool for personal growth, academic achievement and community building.
We are always looking to connect with people who are interested in volunteering -- individuals lead nature walks, work with us to develop new nature-based lesson plans, and may participate in special gardening or arts education projects. Come join us!
