Since loosing my father to cancer nine years ago . I have been blessed to be working as a volunteer at MD Anderson Cancer Center here in Houston,Texas. Currently I am a volunteer Patient Advocate in the Emergency Center and am piloting a program for volunteer Patient Advocates(First time to be done at MD Anderson). I have had so many life changing experiences through the patients and their families that there isn't a day that goes by when I don't think of how I can help the cancer patient and their families.
"You never know what you will experience in the Emergency Center" I was told by the staff when I first started, I learned quickly. One of my closest friends since the age of 18 walks in for treatment. I did not recognize him at first and wasn't expecting to see him fighting cancer. He was a very private man and did not want anyone to know of his illness. Once he saw me he turned and left the room to gather his emotions as he returned I was sitting with his wife and learned he had the same cancer they saw my father battle. That day gave us the opportunity to sit with each other, laugh, cry and tell each other how much we all loved one another. It was the last time I saw him.Subsequently he lost his battle with cancer at the age of 49. I felt blessed to have been there that day.
I have been asked by many how can you volunteer at MD Anderson it has to be really sad. But quite the opposite once you have been touched by cancer through a family member , friend ,etc.. you get to witness first hand how unyielding the human spirit is and gain strength through these experiences. It is very rewarding in so many ways. I have laughed as many times as I have shed a tear and I am very thankful for everyone I meet through my work at MD Anderson.
I was asked to do a short video for MD Anderson Cancer Center's annual report this year about why I do what I do.
