HERE'S THE STORY:
Twenty four miles of the Colorado River runs through the NCA. We recently established the Cottonwood Club with the goal of restoring shade and natural habitat along this stretch of the river.
Cottonwood trees are native along the Colorado River corridor, but have been threatened by the invasive, water-greedy tamarisk. A reduction in natural flooding has made it difficult for young saplings to take hold.
Bureau of Land Management staff initiated the planting of cottonwood trees along the river eight years ago and last year the Friends of McInnis Canyons joined in the effort. Our group solicits donations to purchase trees and organizes an annual tree planting river trip in October.
Cottonwood saplings cost about $14, so for this small donation you can help us purchase a tree. Now, if you’re a publicity hound and want your name included on a sign at the Loma boat launch, a tree will cost you $50. If you have really deep pockets and want to join us on a fun-filled, overnight tree-planting river trip in October 2011…….well, give us a call at (970) 270-7853.
