Afghan Deaf School

THE STORY:
Approximately 10,000 deaf children live in Afghanistan. Most live without any communication with the hearing world.
Mountain2Mountain believes the members of the deaf community in Afghanistan can generate solutions from within. We work with the Afghan National Association for the Deaf (ANAD) to teach qualified teachers to sign.
Thanks to a land donation from the Karzai government in April 2010, plans are underway to break ground in late 2010 for a permanent deaf school in Kabul for ANAD with a teacher training program that will seed future schools in other communities.
Long-term success will require interpreter training, mentorship from the West and the creation of a sustainable program that trains graduates to become teachers and compensates them for their work. Our goal is a vibrant, educated deaf community whose members can contribute to the entire Afghan society.
The first step is to build the foundation wall to ensure security and ownership of the land. M2M is partnering with two innovative green technology companies to do the construction of the wall and the school itself. We need your help to get the first step underway!!
