The Phoenix Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers is going to raise money for bear conservation! The event is called Billiards for Bears. It is a tournament to raise money for the Andean Bear Conservation Project in Ecuador (the leading organization using radio collars to track wild Andean bears ) and Free the Bears (they rescue Asiatic black bears, sun bears and sloth bears from gruesome conditions in various countries in Asia and provide sanctuary). A portion of the money will return to the chapter to further zookeeper education. In addition to the tournament, the event will include carnival-themed games with prizes, a raffle prize, and a trophy to the tournament winner. All of the prizes have been donated from local businesses.
Six of the eight species of bears worldwide are considered threatened due to habitat loss and poaching. Conservation and research efforts for these animals are necessary to prevent losing them forever.
