HERE'S THE STORY:

Hi There!

Riding is fun and a great way to get around, visit friends and explore- but bicycles aren’t toys. Bicycles are actually vehicles. Learning to ride safely and to keep safe while riding will allow you years and years of FUN!

So let's talk about Dillon & Kieran's project:

Who:
Dillon & Kieran are raising money to help put a lid on every kid that they can in Portland.
When Dillon was asked what he wanted to do for his first grade community project, he said "Keep kids safe." Days later, he noticed a kid riding his bike without a helmet and and the Lids-4-Kids Helmet Drive was born. His classmate Kieran volunteered to help him out.

The boys are partnering with Northwest Trail Alliance who is helping them with purchasing and distribution.

---

Where: Portland, OR
This program is available to any child who can't otherwise obtain a helmet.

---

When:
Fundraising - Now through June 1st, 2011
Helmet Distribution: June 26th, NWTA table at the North Portland Sunday Parkways
(if you purchase a helmet for your child, don't forget to bring your receipt)

---

Why:
Because it's a good thing to keep the goo on the inside!    ....and Oregon law requires every child on any wheeled device to wear a helmet.

---

How:
Donate money to purchase helmets for kids in need.

Donation Options:
  • Straight donation:  $15 / helmet. Don't buy just one!
  • B1G2: Buy one for your child; give two to someone else. $45

Perks:
  • Donors $15+ -  Warm & fuzzy feelings on the inside.
  • Donors $45+ -  Listed on the website's wall of gratitude; Virtual Hi-Fives from Dillon & Kieran
  • Donors $100+ - Signed, limited edition artwork.

---

Statistics:
  • More than 70 percent of 5-to 14-year-olds ride bicycles
  • Head injury is the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes and is the most important determinant of death and permanent disability. The single most effective way to reduce head injury from bicycle crashes is to wear a helmet
  • In fact, riders who don't wear helmets are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than riders who do.
  • Unfortunately, national estimates report that helmet use among child bicyclists ranges from 15 to 25 percent. It is lowest among children ages 11 to 14 .

Help us keep kids safe and make sure every kid has a lid!

Thank you,

Dillon and Kieran (1st grade community project)

My bike shop owner/mechanic's daughter - when she was young - fell off her bike while riding in the yard; no helmet resulted in a massive hematoma. I have been down several times since I started seriously bicycling in 1988 - once at 48 mph coming down a hill in Colorado. With so many different helmet give aways, there is no reason a child or adult should be without a helmet. The idea that, "I've never fallen," is so much garbage. No one PLANS AN ACCIDENT! We have a name for those people who don't wear helmets - ORGAN DONORS. Thanks for this great idea.
