We're trying to raise awareness and bust the myths about Tourette Syndrome. Tourette's Syndrome is so much more than the "tics"
Unfortunately, Hollywood has given TS a bad wrap and and the subject is often misunderstood or taboo.
Over 200,000 (Americans) have TS, including Well known Athletes, Actors, Musicians and my son! It's even believed that Samuel Johnson and Howard Hughes had TS! Look what THEY achieved! Because of the specifics in diagnosing, my son was not officially diagnosed until 5 but started showing signs as early as 2 years old. TS can be difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to understand. It is composed of symptoms such as a series of motor/phonic "tics" Imagine spending your days and nights with the constant retraint of having to hold in a sneeze! Seems impossible, right? That is what children and adults with Tourette's Syndrome face every day. Ts is often (comorbid) with other illnesses such as ADHD/OCD/ODD my son's diangosis included. One condition, Coprolalia, is often present with Tourette's. It is rare and it is also the reason we realized my son may have indeed had Tourettes Syndrome. Coprolalia is usually the only part of Tourette's Syndrome you will see displayed in Hollywood/TV. This causes inappropriate behavior and words. One thing to remember: it CAN NOT BE HELPED AND IT IS IN NO WAY HUMOROUS. Tolerance and Education make the biggest change!Check out WWW.TSA-USA.org or just come to me with any questions.
