Disability Rights New Mexico (DRNM) is a nonprofit human, civil and legal rights agency for people with disabilities. DRNM is the designated Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agency for the State of New Mexico. We help people with disabilities obtain access to Medicaid, Special Education, Self-Determination, Community Services, Healthcare, Vocational Rehabilitation, ADA Rights, Assistive Technology and many more disability services and programs.
The P&A system was created in response to the horrible conditions at the Willowbrook Institute (NY) for people with developmental disabilities, exposed by Geraldo Rivera in the seventies. In addition to the creation of the Developmental Disabilities Act, Congress foresaw the need for an enforcement mechanism and mandated the P&A System through the Act and all subsequent rights legislation for people with disabilities.
DRNM provides its services on an individual case level as well as on the systemic level through direct advocacy, legal representation and class actions.
Times are tough and DRNM can no longer rely on the Federal funding we've enjoyed for over 30 years. Everything is on the chopping block in Congress including funding for the P&A system and Medicaid, the tattered health care safety net for people with disabilities.
