Mission
The mission of Disabled Sports USA is to provide national leadership and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation incommunity sports, recreation and educational programs.
About us
Founded in 1967, Disabled Sports USA is a charitable organization that provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence and fitness through participation in sports. What began as a program to serve Vietnam veterans has since grown into one of the nation’s largest multi-sport, multi-disability organizations, annually serving more than 60,000 wounded warriors, youth and adults with disabilities. A member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, Disabled Sports USA offers programs in more than 40 summer and winter sports through its nationwide network of more than 100 community-based chapters.
Our Impact
Disabled Sports USA has been shown to provide a long-lasting, essential difference in the lives of those we serve, as sports rehabilitation has been proven to be very effective at giving people with severe disabilities the physical strength, motivation and confidence to fully join their family, friends and communities in life affirming activities. In fact in 2009, an independent Harris survey of more than 1,000 people with disabilities found that those that had participated in Disabled Sports USA sports programs had higher levels of health and happiness than those not involved with DSUSA (http://www.dsusa.org/DSUSA-Srv09.pdf).
Our expertise in sports programming for people with severe disabilities has led to being selected as a member of the US Olympic Committee, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and a partner with the US Paralympics, who recognized DSUSA with their 2009 Amazing Salute Award.
DSUSA is also an active partner with the following national sports organizations: Professional Golfers Association (PGA), Professional Ski Instructors of America – American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA-AASI), US Ski and Snowboard Association, American Canoe Association, USA Cycling, USA Water Ski, Diving Equipment & Manufacturing Association and US Handcycling.
