A spring vote for you!

With all the headlines screaming disaster and heartache, it's easy to get disheartened. Reader to Reader has supported schools damaged by tornadoes, public libraries devastated by flooding, and communities deeply affected by local tragedy. But each day we see examples of how much good is out there. That goodness is not always in the headlines. Sometimes, it's tucked quietly away, but it's there, and is the very reason we do this work--to bring books and other resources to the next generation that so richly deserves them.

Reader to Reader needs your help to get books in the hands of children across the country. Will you donate or join our team? Your support makes a difference!

Thanks,
Kat

Happy January vote! Wishing you and your projects the very best this year.
On Thanksgiving Day 2012, someone broke in to Hopi Mission School in Kykotsmovi Village, AZ and stole all their laptops. Without them, students have little access to technology, research, Internet and essential learning tools. No one deserves to lose learning opportunities and resources because of someone else's hurtful actions.
Reader to Reader is raising funds to not only replace these computers, but to keep them safe in a locking cart and prevent any future theft. If you can, please help me support the children of Hopi Mission School today. If you donate $17 or more, Crowdrise will automatically enter you for a raffle to get a $100 donation to your cause (and a $100 Roozt gift card!)

If you have a minute, please take a look at my Reader to Reader projects- we get books in the hands of those that don't otherwise have access to them. Thanks for your consideration!

Hi Doris,

October vote for you, just in time for Halloween! Wanna hear something scary? Children in low-income neighborhoods have access to only one age-appropriate book on average for every 300 children. Only ONE book! That impacts over 16,400,000 children in the United States.

Even more frightening, 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children. Books are so important to a child’s development for learning, imagination and literacy.

Please help Reader to Reader get books into these communities. We donate hundreds of thousands of books each year directly to schools, after-school programs, classrooms, day care programs and other groups serving low-income children across the country. Your donation of $10 today will help us send a box full of much-needed books to6 children that deserve better.
Thanks for all your support, and spread the word!

Happy reading,
Kat (and the Reader to Reader team)

Stuff About Me:

Put your heart, mind and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.  -Swami Sivananda

I am an eternal optimist.  I love to laugh (and really loud), play, read to my kids, sing in the car (often out of tune), dance, play rock band and enjoy every moment.  As Ferris Bueller would say “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”  And I don’t want to miss a single thing!

So my life is all about giving back to make this crazy world we live in a bit better than I found it.  I love to volunteer and raise money for good causes.  Best title ever was Mama Duck!  Loved helping raise more than $300,000 to help prevent child abuse in our community.  I don’t take no for an answer- no to me means I just have to work a little bit harder to win you over.  My friends may run screaming the other direction when they see me for fear they will have to empty their wallets. But hey, every little bit counts, even if it’s just the change from the seat cushions in the sofa.  Even my kiddos get in the game. My son once shamed an unsuspecting shopper coming out of the store who refused to buy a raffle ticket to stop child abuse.  He said ”why won’t that person help kids” and they turned around and came back to buy a ticket.  I have spent most of my volunteer and fundraising efforts helping kids.  I want all kiddos to have the best chance at a successful life and to feel loved and cherished.  After all, they are our future.  I am a dedicated Rotarian and try to live by the “Service above Self” motto.  My favorite current volunteer project is The Gift of Literacy our Rotary Club does each year where we give a new hardbound book to every 1st grader in the Springfield School District.  There is nothing more awesome than watching the glee and pure excitement of an auditorium full of 1st graders opening their new backpacks and pulling out that book.

The non-profit I work for is having our first 5K run/walk and I am going to run in honor of my baby sis.  I hope you’ll consider helping support the effort and give the gift of communication.  Check out our page!
