Our Mission
Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser. The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation's mission is to find better treatments and cures for the movement disorders, dystonia and Parkinson's disease, and to provide medical and patient information.
Dystonia is a neurological muscle disorder that causes uncontrollable and, at times, painful spasms in one or more parts of the body. It affects an estimated 500,000 men, women and children in North America alone.
Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the central nervous system caused by a change in the part of the brain that controls movements like walking and balance. It affects approximately 1 million Americans. A fourfold increase in the number of people afflicted with Parkinson's disease is estimated in 40 years as America's population ages.
The Bachmann-Strauss Foundation is the leading organization actively looking at the connection between dystonia and Parkinson's disease. Our strategic research investments include awarding "seed money" to scientists, sometimes at the earliest stages of their work, thus enabling them to explore their most promising hypotheses and leverage additional funding.
We have funded over 200 research studies around the world resulting in the groundbreaking discovery of the genes that cause DYT1 and DYT6 dystonia. The research we support has led to testing new therapies including Deep Brain Stimulation; clinicl studies, and the discovery of compounds and genes that are leading to potential new drug development to treat dystonia, Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders.
