Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser.
Edible Schoolyard NYC is a nonprofit organization established in 2010 that works to incorporate health, wellness and sustainability into New York City's public school curriculum through lessons taught in the garden and kitchen classroom. Our long-term goal is to combat childhood obesity by providing all of New York City’s 1.1 million public school students access to an edible education.
• More than 3 million New Yorkers live in neighborhoods where access to fresh fruits and vegetables is limited. Without the time, resources or knowledge about healthy food, too many low-income families fall victim to our broken food system.
• Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. Tragically, a childhood plagued by obesity can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or cancer. New York is consistently ranked among the top 5 states in adult obesity-related medical costs.
• With every meal, unhealthy eating habits get passed down to children. If we don’t make real changes now, today’s children will be the first generation with a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
Since establishing our program less than two years ago, we have taught hundreds of NYC public school children how to grow their own food, prepare it deliciously, and provided them with the vital knowledge and skills they need to make healthy and sustainable food choices throughout their lives.
