THE STORY:

In Somaliland, 1-in-12 women die in childbirth. In the aftermath of civil war, with the country’s healthcare system in ruins, Edna Adan Ismail built a maternity hospital out of the rubble, determined to reduce the unacceptably high maternal mortality rate of Somali women.

Among the women she has been able to reach, Edna has reduced the maternal mortality rate by an astounding 75%. But many more women need her help, and Edna has set a goal to train and deploy 1,000 midwives across the country. $4,200 trains one midwife. Help her reach her goal.

We recently welcomed a wonderful son into our family, after complications during his labor and delivery that would have been devastating had we not had access to excellent medical care. Every woman deserves care of that quality for herself and her children. 1 year ago
