HERE'S THE STORY:

RED WOLF COALITION INC wrote -

In red wolf country, it's almost impossible to see these fascinating animals. The red wolf's home isn't like Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley, where wide vistas of open landscape give visitors breathtaking views of gray wolves hunting and raising their pups. Red wolf habitat is thick with dense vegetation and tangled underbrush. Anyone who sees a wild red wolf is lucky, especially if a camera is within reach!

But red wolves are special—the amber eyes, the rich tawny coat tinged with the signature autumn red, the effortless grace as the wolf moves along at a flowing trot—and people want to see them in a natural setting.

The Red Wolf Coalition has geared up to take on this challenge by working to enclose a spacious woodland habitat for a few “ambassador” red wolves near the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Columbia, North Carolina. This enclosure will provide the wolves with a natural environment designed to showcase them for visitors and to ensure their safety, comfort and freedom from stress. [The enclosure shown in the photo to the left is at the International Wolf Center in Minnesota, and is very similar to the facility we plan to construct.]

*What the Red Wolves Need*
This habitat requires significant fencing, as well as enhancements like boulders, hollow logs and den boxes. Visitors and program participants will be able to observe the ambassador wolves and to learn how they live in the wild.

*The Benefits for Red Wolves—and for People!*
This enclosure will pay two big dividends for people and for red wolves:

(1) The increase in public commitment to the long-term survival of these critically endangered animals.

(2) The value to the local community of making the region's visitors aware of the beauty and allure of red wolf country with its national wildlife refuges and undeveloped lands, home to a huge array of wildlife including bears and migratory birds.

*What YOU Can Do!*

“The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.”
—Rudyard Kipling

Form your own fundraising wolf pack! Expand your pack size and your territory and challenge other packs to bring dollars to the money cache! See who can catch the most dollars. The prey in this case is $100,000 for the project. With your packs out there howling and hunting, we can together build a home for ambassador red wolves!
