THE STORY:

We are "The Epilepsy Road Warriors" and we are running in the 2012 ING New York City Marathon.  You can visit our personal pages through the links below and read our stories.  We all have a story to share.  Then you can help us raise money for Epilepsy Awareness by clicking on the big orange 'DONATE' button.

HERE's MY STORY:

The call came early one morning two years ago.  My brother, sister-in-law and four year old niece, Siena, were at the hospital.  Siena had a grand mal seizure the night before.  Paramedics were called and struggled for over 45 minutes to stabilize her.  We were stunned.  There was no indication prior to this day that she had Epilepsy.  There was no family history.  This caught us all by surprise.

Two years after her first grand mal seizure with violent contractions Siena’s seizures are under control but she suffers from brain sparking 70% of the time during sleep.  You can’t tell when Siena is experiencing sparking, but it certainly has its residual effects on her.  As a result, school is not easy and each day she tries desperately to keep up with her peers.  Every day there are emotional and social struggles.  Her family continues to try new medications to reduce the sparking but they have not yet had success.

Then an email came just two weeks ago (at the end of May).  There was news to share regarding my 2 year old niece on my husband’s side of the family.  She was diagnosed with grand mal seizures without violent contractions.  Again we were stunned; opposite sides of the family, both having children with Epilepsy with no prior family history.  What were the odds?  Evidently, they are higher than we expected.

Some of you may know my family’s story. My mother passed away from breast cancer at age 43. My father suffered a heart attack at age 49. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32 and my sister at age 50. I thought we knew illness and disease all too well. I was mistaken. But one thing was certain; we all had a lot to learn about Epilepsy.

I started running after my diagnosis with cancer.  My goal was to be fit and to stay healthy.  I challenge my family every year to run races together, to exercise.  They know this is my “thing”.  In fact, some have caught the running bug.  But this year is different.  I have never run a marathon but wanted to challenge myself.  I am running with a new purpose and goal.

I am running to raise funds for the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York, EFMNY, (the Epilepsy Institute).  I am thrilled to be raising money to help support the funding needed to raise awareness and education for a disease that is often not talked about and often misunderstood.  Please join me in my efforts and follow my training progress here on my webpage.

Why We Run

We're a team of people whose lives have been impacted by epilepsy. Some of us live with seizures. Some of us are running for loved ones. The fact is we are ALL part of the epilepsy community, because 1 out of every 26 people in the United States will develop a seizure disorder in their lifetime.  That means that you or someone you know is already affected.  So, join us and make your donation today. Together, we can empower individuals and families to live life to fullest with their seizure disorders while we strive for a cure.

The Epilepsy Road Warriors are part of November's National Epilepsy Month. All proceeds will go to raising epilepsy awareness and providing public education throughout New York City and the metropolitan area. All progams provided by the Epilepsy Institute which does business as the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York (EFMNY).
