Essex Street Academy College Fund

HERE'S THE STORY:
We are seeking donations to support the Essex Street Academy (ESA) Collegebound Program. Simply put, we need funding for SAT prep, college trips and college counseling. These are resources our students do not have access to elsewhere.
Our 2010 fundraising goal is $20,000.
OUR SCHOOL:
Founded in 2004, Essex Street Academy (ESA) is a small public school located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, open to high school students from all five boroughs. At ESA, we prepare all of our students for success in college and in life by engaging their intellectual curiosity and providing a safe learning environment. Our students’ needs are our number one priority.
COLLEGEBOUND PROGRAM:
One of our primary goals at ESA is to ensure that each of our students goes on to college. We support them in achieving this goal through our Collegebound program, which offers college bound classes, one-on-one college counseling, SAT prep, and overnight college trips.
The result is that Essex Street Academy consistently graduates over 90% of its seniors (New York City’s graduation rate is currently 60%), all of whom secure college admissions prior to graduation. Recent college acceptances have included: New York University; Hobart William Smith College; Ithaca College; Syracuse University; Bard College; SUNY New Paltz; SUNY Purchase; Fairfield University; Bates College; George Mason University; Wheaton College; Hampshire College; and Bennington College.
It is important to note that the majority of ESA’s students qualify for free and reduced lunch; 40% speak a language other than English at home; 93% are people of color; and the majority are the first in their family to attend college.
Our students are truly beating the odds.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Our operating budget does not cover our Collegebound program. We need the community’s help.
A $150 donation to ESA’s Collegebound Program will sponsor a visit for one student to at least one college campus, as well as their participation in our school's SAT prep program. College visits are essential, as many of our students have never set foot on a college campus. During the trips, students are matched up with a college student, audit classes, and experience college life. These trips solidify their commitment to graduate from high school and attend college. In addition, students who participate in these trips are twice as likely to attend a college out of the city.
