The Foundation for Grieving Children, Inc., the first national non-profit public charity of its kind, raises funds and provides grants to community-based organizations which assist, educate, counsel and comfort grieving children, teens, young adults and their families after the death of a loved one.
We also help families locate support services within their communities, create awareness to the challenges of grieving children, and educate parents, other family members and professionals to their needs.
While there are many organizations which focus on dying or chronically ill children, the F4GC’s focus is to help the survivors left behind after their deaths.
According to a 2009 report by the Social Security Administration, over 2.4 million children in the USA are receiving benefits following the death of a parent. And no formal statistics will ever accurately trace how many siblings and other young relatives, classmates, and friends are grieving from the death of a significant person in their life.
But since nearly 2.5 million people die each year in the USA alone, how many children, teens and young adults are affected by those who died or were killed? Tens of millions, we suspect.
And when the grief of the youngest of our population is not addressed, it can cause the inability to focus on school work, increase levels of anger and frustration leading to fights, addictions to drugs and alcohol, anxiety and depression, criminal behavior including gang violence, promiscuous sexual behavior sometimes leading to untimely and unwanted pregnancies, self-mutilation, dropping out of school, and even attempted and sometimes completed suicides.
Subsequently, it is so important to insure young people not only are encouraged to grieve, but to participate in support groups and services where they are with other children and teens who also have experienced a parent, sibling, classmate or other loved one’s death. It validates their feelings and helps them know they are not alone.
Your support helps insure that organizations continue to keep their doors open and offer grief counseling services to all children, teens and young adults who request help.
If you have experienced the death of a parent or sibling early in life, or you know someone who has, then you will completely understand the emotional, physical, and financial trauma families endure and the great need to support our hurting young people around the USA and the world.
We welcome your help.
With Gratitude,
Mary Mac
