EVENT: 2010 ING New York City Marathon
EVENT DATE: Nov 07, 2010
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Nov 30, 2010
HERE'S THE STORY:
A MISSION, A VISION
I have the honor and privilege of working for Dr. Thomas Tooma, a world renowned eye surgeon who has performed more than 100,000 procedures. In addition to owning 12 eye care centers in Southern California, working as both a business leader and a surgeon, he still finds time to make regular visits to Fiji where he provides much needed cataract surgery for people who are completely dependent on others because of their failing eyes. When the surgery is complete, these people live productive lives without dependence on others.
Dr. Tooma and his wife Marta, a dentist, started the Mission at Natuvu Creek to bring much needed healthcare to the people of Fiji and have made a significant contribution to improve their quality of life by providing eye surgery and dentistry to people who would not otherwise have access to these services. Watch the video - it will touch your heart.
Situated on 750 acres and encompassing an extinct volcano that reaches an altitude of 1,200 feet at its peak, down through rain and bamboo forests, to the shores of Buca Bay, is where the free clinic and other facilities of the Mission at Natuvu Creek are located. It lies on the eastern coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji's 2nd largest island. The rural people of Fiji benefit from the clinic which offers an expanding array of medical services. The Mission also promotes job training and income opportunities through the development of grass-roots industries such as tourism, coconut harvesting, and food production. In addition, the Mission is initiating plans for the construction of a secondary school that will be largely scholarship-based and will offer excellence in education while enabling local children to stay with their families rather than travel to the cities.
Finally, the Mission serves as a base for visiting individuals, families, and teams seeking to serve the people of Fiji and enjoy Fiji's unspoiled beauty.
Thank you!
