HERE'S THE STORY:
The maternity hospital was built by Edna Adan Ismail in order to address the grave health problems that endanger the lives of women and children of Somaliland.
What your donation can help support:
- Normal deliveries: $30
- Training of a community midwives: $200/month
- Fistula repair surgery: $550
Edna is also trying to raise $400,000 to build a solar and wind power system to help power her hospital. She currently spends $60,000 each year on power alone and is saving for a more sustainable model.
Edna Adan’s enthusiasm is contagious. "This little hospital - built on a garbage dump by a crazy old woman who should have retired a long time ago - has reduced maternal mortality rate of the women who come here to one-quarter of the national average," she says. "And if Somaliland can do it - a poor country that is not politically recognized, then any other country can do it, too."
