THE STORY:

Getting Out and Staying Out  rises to the challenge of recidivism through education, training and employment. GOSO is dedicated to drastically reducing the recidivism rate for 16- to 24-year-old justice involved men by ensuring economic independence through purposeful education and directed employment.

GOSO - The recidivism rate for GOSO participants is 17%, as compared to a national rate of 66%

HERE’S THE PROBLEM - The United States has become the incarceration capital of the world.

▪ With only 5% of the world’s population, the U.S. incarcerates 25% of the world’s prison population.

▪ Nearly one third of American adults are arrested by age 23.

▪ 66% of all released individuals will be re-incarcerated within three years.

▪ The cost of incarceration to the American taxpayer is staggering; it was $75 billion in 2008, and it has risen every year since. The human cost is incalculable.

WHY IS IT HAPPENING? A lack of education and unemployment are major contributing factors to recidivism. 60% of incarcerated men do not have a high school diploma or GED. Young African-American males who drop out of high school have higher odds of being in jail than being employed.

SUPPORT OUR EFFORT - GOSO breaks the cycle of poverty and recidivism early, by focusing on the population at greatest risk; incarcerated young men aged 16 – 24 from the most economically challenged communities in New York City.  We provide the keys to financial independence and self-esteem: education, training and employment, coupled with mentoring, counseling and support services that help our participants make the transition from incarceration to being productive members of the community.

PRE-RELEASE: Early intervention during incarceration is the key to our success. GOSO reaches out to young men during the first days of their incarceration so they can quickly begin the process of reshaping their future. We provide reentry planning, mentoring and counseling, and continue that support through correspondence for those who are sentenced to upstate prisons.

POST-RELEASE: Once released, GOSO participants visit our East Harlem office for comprehensive post-release services. GOSO helps participants capitalize on the individual strengths and abilities of each participant to engage him, motivate him, and guide him along a path to meaningful and sustainable employment. We provide:

▪ Intensive job readiness training

▪ Mentoring from successful business leaders

▪ Individual therapy and anger management

▪ One-on-one education and employment counseling

▪ Onsite GED classes and individual tutoring

▪ Referrals to vocational training programs

▪ Paid internships

▪ Assistance in applying for college and financial aid

▪ College prep and free college textbooks

▪ Resumes, business attire, and Metrocards

Your donation will help fund a paid internship or hard skills job training.

GOSO - We know it works

Each year, GOSO's pre- and post-release programs serve more than 1,000 men, 300 of them after they have been released. Only 17% of our active participants are re-arrested.  On average, 60% who remain in the program for one year or more are working and/or in school. Our college retention rate is currently 83%; our three-month job retention rate is 75%. GOSO Guys really do get out and stay out.
