MISSION: PROVIDE UNIFORMS FOR HAITIAN CHILDREN IN NEED
Haiti, once the richest European colony in the Americas, is now the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and is home to over 9 million people. Roughly half of all Haitians live in absolute poverty, earning less than $1 a day. More than two-thirds of the population are unemployed. Haiti has a very large young population, in part because of a high birthrate and shorter life expectancies – 37% of Haitians are younger than 14, 59% are between 15 and 64 years old, and just 3% are 65 and older. There are over 400,000 children without parents in Haiti.
Education is a vital need in Haiti.
Literacy rates in Haiti for the general population were 45% in 2010.
50% of primary school-aged children in Haiti are not enrolled in school.
1/3 of girls over six never go to school.
More than 70% of children attending school are overage for their grade.
Approximately 30% of children attending primary school will not make it the third grade; 60% will abandon school before the sixth grade.
With uniforms being a requirement in most schools, Haitian families are often left with the decision to either provide food and shelter for their family, or invest in an education. Without proper schooling, most Haitian children are likely to remain in a life of poverty. Access to an education creates new opportunities for them to rise above their dire circumstances by providing the tools necessary to advance in today's world.
