EVENT DATE: Oct 07, 2014

~~The HMF FitKids program was developed by the Hartford Marathon Foundation to introduce kids to the benefits of running, a habit of physical fitness, and healthy lifestyle choices. In the United States, childhood obesity is one of the most significant health concerns facing us today. Educating kids about the importance of living an active lifestyle is the cornerstone of the HMF FitKids program.
~~In 2013, HMF partnered with 40 elementary and middle schools in central Connecticut to produce a school-based running program. The program is held in conjunction with the Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon. Participating students run with their teacher(s) before, during or after school for six weeks and accumulate 25 miles. Students are invited to run their "final mile," and complete their own marathon at a special day during Hartford Marathon week. HMF provides leadership, manuals, team shirts and entry into a HMF event. All students are awarded a “finisher’s medal.” The event includes transportation, music, healthy snacks, and celebrity appearances. Also, HMF partners with the YMCA to include a kids focused expo, called “The HMF World of Fitness” at the event. The expo involves dozens of interactive displays to show kids how to have fun while staying fit.
