Which is great if all you get out of school is pencils, books & dirty looks. But for 30 million kids, the free or reduced-price meals they receive at school are the only ones they can rely on. Without this vital nutrition assistance, the youngest and most vulnerable Americans wake up every day not knowing where they’ll find their next meal.
It’s a heartbreaking problem that affects kids in every community, of every race and religion. For them, the last school bell in June means a season of rumbling tummies, anxiety and fear.
When school meals take a summer vacation, emergency food providers work overtime to make sure their shelves are stocked to meet the increased demand.
