A spring vote for you!

With all the headlines screaming disaster and heartache, it's easy to get disheartened. Reader to Reader has supported schools damaged by tornadoes, public libraries devastated by flooding, and communities deeply affected by local tragedy. But each day we see examples of how much good is out there. That goodness is not always in the headlines. Sometimes, it's tucked quietly away, but it's there, and is the very reason we do this work--to bring books and other resources to the next generation that so richly deserves them.

Reader to Reader needs your help to get books in the hands of children across the country. Will you donate or join our team? Your support makes a difference!

Thanks,
Kat

Happy January vote! Wishing you and your projects the very best this year.
On Thanksgiving Day 2012, someone broke in to Hopi Mission School in Kykotsmovi Village, AZ and stole all their laptops. Without them, students have little access to technology, research, Internet and essential learning tools. No one deserves to lose learning opportunities and resources because of someone else's hurtful actions.
Reader to Reader is raising funds to not only replace these computers, but to keep them safe in a locking cart and prevent any future theft. If you can, please help me support the children of Hopi Mission School today. If you donate $17 or more, Crowdrise will automatically enter you for a raffle to get a $100 donation to your cause (and a $100 Roozt gift card!)

August vote for you! Did you know that 60% of low-income children do not own a single book? School and public libraries are their only source of reading material, yet budget cuts leave many libraries unable to buy new books, or even without a full-time librarian. Reading is so important to a kid's education. Would you help Reader to Reader bring books to low-income schools and libraries across the country? A $10 donation sends a much-needed box of books. If you can't give, please join our team and ask others to help change the world, one book at a time. Thank you!

Summer is here, and I’m …
Summer is here, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to enjoying its glory. (I am!) But did you know that kids forget 1-3 months of learning during the summer? That’s 1-3 months of what they learned the year before, needing to be retaught in the fall before they can even start learning new material. This summer learning loss is worse in disadvantaged children, and widens the achievement gap further.
Summer learning programs are important to keep children’s brains active and engaged. Reader to Reader runs three summer programs, including one with both parents and children to increase family literacy. We have a lot of fun, and we learn A LOT!
Please help us keep summer learning fun and engaging for low-income families in western Massachusetts by joining our team, spreading the word and if you can, donating to Reader to Reader. Your support helps us keep kids reading, learning and succeeding!

CROWDRISING SINCE: Jun 15, 2010
Stuff About Me:
Image One contributes a percentage of its profits to help raise awareness and funding for autism. Our mission is to contribute $1,000,000+ to autism.

Danielle Pearlman is 10 years old and has autism. She is the daughter of Image One CEO Joel Pearlman.

A STORY OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE:

It started with a feeling. A feeling only a parent understands; a feeling that something was not right with their child.

When Danielle Pearlman was about 20 months old, her parents noticed a change in her behavior - their beautiful baby didn’t meet their loving gaze; her development seemed different, more delayed, than other babies. At first, they thought she might have a hearing loss issue. After having her tested and evaluated, a diagnosis came back that confirmed that feeling – a diagnosis of autism.

Imagine what it must be like to be new parents and to receive a diagnosis that forever alters your dreams and hopes for your child. The range of emotions is overwhelming – denial, anger, loss, fear and grief. Danielle’s parents experienced all those emotions, and more, when they were given the news. Joel Pearlman, Danielle’s father, described the diagnosis as experiencing a kind of ‘death.’ But many parents of autistic children will tell you, there is another side to that diagnosis. There is the relief in knowing that that feeling has a name and while autism isn’t curable, there are supportive treatments that can allow your child to grow and thrive. Then there are the gifts, ones you don’t have to look very hard for. The gifts that are found in Danielle’s smile, her infectious laughter, her loving spirit, and the way her energy pulls you in the minute you enter the room.

About two years ago, someone close to Joel asked him a question:

What is Danielle here to teach you?

Joel didn’t have to think twice about the answer.

Unconditional love.
