HERE'S THE STORY:
The Innocence Project was founded in 1992 to assist prisoners who could be proven innocent through DNA testing. To date, 261 people in the United States have been exonerated by DNA testing, including 17 who served time on death row. These people served an average of 13 years in prison before exoneration and release.
Their full-time staff attorneys and Cardozo clinic students provide direct representation or critical assistance in most of these cases. The Innocence Project’s groundbreaking use of DNA technology to free innocent people has provided irrefutable proof that wrongful convictions are not isolated or rare events but instead arise from systemic defects.
I am a member of The Innocence Project Artists’ Committee. It's a group of writers, directors, actors, visual artists and musicians who support the Innocence Project and are helping raise awareness about wrongful convictions. I could not be more proud to support this organization.
I can't even begin to imagine how awful it would be to be wrongly accused for a crime you did not do. Essentially, your life is over and you have no hope.
Thanks to the generous support of a concerned community of individuals and institutions, the Innocence Project has freed hundreds of innocent people from prison, and led the fight for criminal justice reforms to protect innocent Americans from wrongful prosecution and imprisonment.
